Cormorant Fishing on the Nagara River

Time-Honored Fishing Tradition with 1,300 Years of History

Cormorant Fishing on the Nagara River

About

Cormorant fishing, called ukai in Japanese, is a traditional fishing technique in which cormorant fishing masters manipulate Japanese cormorants to catch “ayu,” also called sweetfish, which inhabit the Nagara River. With a long-standing history of over 1,300 years, the cormorant fishing masters in Gifu who practice this craft in were privy to the patronage of powerful lords during feudal times, and in the present day are the only cormorant fishermen in the country to be affiliated with the Imperial Household Agency. During the cormorant fishing season which lasts from May 11 to October 15 of every year, cormorant fishing masters don their traditional garments and take to the river, directing their cormorants under the gentle light of torches in the still dark of night. The climax of the event is when the six vessels form a line, driving ayu into shallow waters. If desired, it is possible to arrange for a delicious meal to be served prior to your cormorant fishing observation experience.
