National Treasure Kunosan Toshogu Shinto Shrine

Magnificent Shinto Shrine sacred to the memory of Tokugawa Ieyasu

National Treasure Kunosan Toshogu Shinto Shrine

About

This Shinto Shrine was erected in 1617 to the spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is the headquarters of Toshogu shrines all over the country. Shogun Ieyasu passed away at Sunpu Castle in 1616, and his remains were buried in Mt. Kunosan as per his will. By the order of the second Shogun, Hidetada, this shrine was constructed here. Gongen-style main shrine building was designated as a national treasure in 2010 as the oldest Toshogu architecture. You can see the gorgeously colored, imposing main building. The graveyard and the museum housing 2,000 cultural properties are also well worth seeing. You can get to the shrine by either an aerial ropeway or 1,159 stone steps from the mountain foot. On the way to the shrine, you will be fully satisfied with a wonderful view of Suruga Bay.
