Boating Excursion in the Lakeside District and Historic Strolling
Hachiman-bori moat is an old canal located in Omi-hachiman, the lakeside city of Lake Biwa. When Hidetsugu, the adopted son of Toyotomi Hideyoshi who was a great samurai leader, built a castle town at the foot of Mt. Hachiman, this moat was built in order to make all the cargo boats sailing to and fro across Lake Biwa stop at the Hachiman port. The scenery of white-walled storehouses and old-established families’ houses stand in a row along the moat, which continues to the torii gate of Himure-hachimangu Shinto Shrine and Hakuun Bridge, is full of a historic atmosphere. In the whole area, starting with the Tile Museum, the former Nishikawa family’ House, the former Ban family’s House and Shinmachi-dori Street or Nagahara-machi-dori Street, which are lined with the Omi merchants’ houses, are all located. Therefore, it is best suited for historic strolling. This is also well-known for the location for film.
