About

Historically one of the most important temples in the Tokai area, the Houkou-ji was founded in 1371 by Prince Mumon, son of the emperor Go-Daigo, and is the Head Temple of the Rinzai Zen sect. Around the wide precincts are statues of the 500 disciples of the Buddha and the Important Cultural Asset listed Shichisonbosatsu-do. In 2014 the main object of worship, the Shakasanzonzo idol was designated an Import Cultural Asset. The Houkou-ji is a temple where anyone can try cultural Zen meditation, sutra transcription, and drawing images of the Buddha. Simple, traditional vegetable and bean based vegetarian dishes can also be sampled here. Houkou-ji is one of the Five Temples of Hamanako, along with the Shosan Horin-ji Ryotan-ji Makaya-ji and the Daifukuji temples.
