About

These are the only medieval ruins where the restored castle town is maintained and open to public. The ruins are the sites of the castle town belonged to Asakura Clan, and stayed buried in the southeast of Fukui city. Excavation and research had been performed since 1967, and later 278ha area including Ichijodani was designated as National Special Ruins. The zone including four gardens such as Suwakan-ato  Garden, was also registered as National Special Place of Scenic Beauty. The restored castle town is located in the west of the gardens. First, long earthen walls of Samurai residences were restored followed by merchant houses, town houses, a landlord‘s house and a dyer’s shop. The interiors of these houses are also well reconstructed. More than 1.6million relics were excavated over 30 years, and they are exhibited at Prefectural Museum.

Access

Get off at JR Fukui Station, then catch a taxi(approx.20 min.) or board Keifuku bus bound for Jokyoji(approx.35 min.), get off at Bukeyashiki-mae.
