Yudanaka-Shibu Hot Spring Village

About

At the foot of Shiga-kogen highlands, there is a hot spring village with its unique character where 9 different hot springs (Yudanaka, Shibu, Andai, Kanbayashi, Shinyudanaka, Hoshikawa, Honami, Kadoma and Jigokudani) are located. Among them, Yudanaka hot spring enjoys 1,350-year history since it was first found, and Shibu hot spring keeps a nostalgic atmosphere with town streets paved with stones, moreover, visiting public bathhouses scattered in the town is a lot of fun. Each hot spring in this hot spring village is a renowned spa, however, Jigokudani hot spring is strikingly characteristic. ‘Jigokudani-yaenkoen’ or the Snow Monkey Park is world- famous where wild Japanese macaques keep themselves warm by taking an open-air bath for their exclusive use. Their bathing scene looks so comfortable and humorous. During winter, as they take a bath with their heads covered with snow, they are attracting widespread popularity as “snow monkeys”.
