Iga Braided Cord

Beautiful handcraft of braded silk threads

Iga Braided Cord

About

This is a traditional handcraft art passed down in Iga City and its neighboring areas in Mie prefecture. It is said that the origin dates back before the Nara period (710~). The works are designated as traditional handcraft of Japan. In old days, the braided cord was used for Buddhist alter fittings or swords and armors of samurai warriors. It was also utilized to decorate the sash belt called “Obi” as “obidome” or a cord holding an obi in place. Currently, a variety of items using the braided cord such as accessories, key chains, neckties, belts etc. are invented and sold as souvenirs available at a reasonable price. They are loved by foreign tourists. A charming point of the braided cord is a gloss of silk threads colorfully and beautifully dyed, a unique finish of braided cord represented by each thread, and its elegant design of Japan.
