Colorful beckoning cats of Tokoname and Seto Ware

Beckoning cats

About

Beckoning cats are good luck ornaments which have existed from ancient times. A cat, whose right front paw is raised, is expected to bring fortunes, and a cat with left one raised up, is considered to invite customers. You can often see such pottery cats in many restaurants. Aichi prefecture has two major producers of both Tokoname and Seto Wares. In both cities, if you drop in pottery shops, there are various types of beckoning cats in different sizes. There are color variations and each color is said to have good luck; pink for romance, red to avoid sickness, blue for traffic safety, etc. You can also find hand-made cats designed by pottery artists, or interior goods with hand-painted beckoning cats. Those items of beckoning cats rank No.1 among popular souvenirs of foreign tourists.
