Lacquer Ware of Kiso

Traditional handcraft in former Nakasendo Highway

Lacquer Ware of Kiso

About

This is traditional table ware made from wood such as Japanese cypress, Japanese Judas tree, Japanese horse-chestnut with Japanese lacquer applied on the surface. Its main producer is an area called Narakawa, located at a gateway to former Nakasendo Highway along Kiso mountains. The area’s altitude, 900-meter above sea level, presents a cool climate which is suitable for applying lacquer. Moreover, the place is blessed with high-quality timbers. There is a historical record saying that lacquered furniture were brought to residences of samurai warriors of the Owari clan in feudal days. Thus, the history of lacquer ware of Kiso has a 400-year-old history. The table ware charms people with its beautiful luster unique to lacquer ware, its light weight and its sturdiness. If you buy the table ware such as a cup and saucer, a bowl with lid or a plate, it is wasteful not to use them. It is highly recommended that you use them on a table in daily life.
