Wakasa Lacquered Chopsticks

Beautiful lacquer ware created by the craftsmen serving for the Obama Domain government

Wakasa Lacquered Chopsticks

About

“Wakasa lacquered chopsticks” are a perfect souvenir of Japan. The chopsticks are traditional crafts in Obana City located on Wakasa Bay. The lacquer ware craftsmen purveying for Obama domain government created them in Keicho era (1596-1614), in the beginning of Edo period. Seashells and eggshells are first pasted to describe beautiful scenery of the bottom of the sea, covered with various colors of lacquer and gold leaf, and then finished by applying lacquer about six times. The layers of lacquer are carefully ground out and polished. As it takes about six months to accomplish a pair of chopsticks, they are rather expensive. The luster of genuine lacquer is exquisite. Since transparent lacquer is used, gold leaf beneath the layers of lacquer will come to be revealed with time, adding a delicate touch to the chopsticks. If you use them with care, they will last for the rest of your life. So please take time and select your favorite ones.
