Nameshi-Dengaku, a Combination of Rice with Daikon Leaves and a Grilled Tofu with Miso Paste

About

“Nameshi” is freshly cooked rice which is mixed with chopped Daikon radish leaves. And “Dengaku” means small pieces of tofu, or soybean curds which are skewered and grilled after applying sweet miso paste on top. The set of two dishes is called “Nameshi-Dengaku”. This combination was a specialty of Yoshida-juku, (currently in Toyohashi city,) an old post town along Tokaido Highway. In Yoshida-juku, a long-standing restaurant of “Nameshi-Dengaku” with 200-year-old history is still in operation. The Dengaku of the shop whose crispy flavor of home-made tofu with miso made by secret recipe is marvelously delicious. Also, in Inuyama, which is famous for its tourist spot, Meijimura Open-air Museum of Architecture, this menu is popular. You can eat a set menu of Dengaku served with clear soup there.
