Goheimochi Rice Cakes

About

Goheimochi, grilled rice cake that is skewered and basted in a thick sauce, is popular to the point where it almost omnipresent at food stalls throughout Gifu Prefecture. Long part of the culinary traditions of Gifu Prefecture and certain areas in Nagano and Aichi, goheimochi comes in a variety of shapes and flavors depending on the region. They can take the shape of small balls or long, flat ovals, and are coated in a rich sauce that is soy, miso, or sesame-based. Grilled to perfection and giving off an aroma that is to die for, the simple flavor of this rice treat is best enjoyed hot. Its unique texture, form factor, and the ease with which it can eaten have earned it high praise from international visitors, who often exclaim that it’s “unlike any kind of food we have back home!”
