Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with fishing grounds along a long varied coastal line covering Izu Peninsula, Suruga Bay, Sea of Enshu and Lake Hamana. Therefore, you can find a variety of fresh fish in Shizuoka. There are 49 fishing ports there including Yaizu port which boasts to have one of the largest catch in Japan as well as Simizu port, because fishery is prosperous not only in near-shore or inshore waters, but also, in off-shore waters and deep sea. “Kaisen-don” or a bowl of rice topped with cherry shrimp, baby sardines, salmon roe, tuna or bonito, which are freshly caught, is a popular dish. You can find a variety of such dishes in a diner in ports or in a shop selling fish directly sent from ports. Furthermore, sashimi, sushi, grilled fish or cooked fish are all available in each season.
