Shizuoka Oden or Hodgepodge

About

Oden or Japanese hodgepodge is a casual pot dish which has “oden dane” or different ingredients such as fried fish paste, Japanese radishes, boiled eggs, potatoes etc. They are stewed in a broth for a long time and people enjoy various tastes one by one. A Sizuoka oden has been descended since the Taisho Period (1912~1926). A dark soup normally has been added little by little for a long time, making the soup full of condensed savor. Popular ingredients are black fish paste, fried fish paste, kelp etc. Those foods are skewered with bamboo sticks and placed in a pot to be stewed. According to your preference, you can sprinkle powdered dried bonito or dried sea weed over the dish. In Aoi ward, a central part of the city, there are “Aoba lane” and “Aoba oden street”, a concentrated area of many oden shops, which you can drop in anytime to taste the oden by yourself.
