Cormorant Fishing on the Nagara River in Gifu
Ukai is an ancient fishing method where tamed cormorants, beneath a torch fire in an iron basket hung from the prow of the boat at night, are used to catch sweet fish called “Ayu”. Cormorant fishing dates back more than 1,300 years. Six cormorant fishing masters, authorized by the Board of Ceremonies of the Imperial Household Agency, ride on a boat and skillfully manipulate 10-12 cormorants to catch sweet fish with their sharp beaks. Visitors can watch this performance at close quarters on the cormorant fishing viewing boat.
